The LU Worksite Safety and Security Induction (LU-WSSI) is an entry-level competence intended for staff that will work on London Underground managed infrastructure on behalf of TFL. The WSSI provides staff with a health and safety induction for working on construction sites, rail depots and station maintenance. It covers the safety procedures and risks that are common across the rail industry, whatever the role and type of site. A Sentinel card validated for the LU Worksite Safety and Security Induction (LU-WSSI) endorsement is required for access to sites. LUCAS cards and ICI assessments are no longer valid.

How do I take the induction and get my WSSI competence?

Step 1: Induction E-learning

To access the mandatory E-learning induction, your Sponsor or employer will need to reach out to us. This will enable us to create your login credentials. The E-learning module typically takes about one to two hours to complete. It is divided into short sections, with each section taking only 15-20 minutes to complete.

Feel free to complete the sections at your own pace; there is no need to do them all in one go. You are welcome to revisit any section as many times as needed. The E-learning includes interactive segments that offer valuable information you will need to explore in preparation for the assessment.

Step 2: Assessment

After you are confident in your understanding of the induction content, you can inform your Sponsor or Employer. They can then arrange for your assessment at one of our approved training centres. Your learning journey is flexible and designed to support your success.

Your Sponsor or Employer can book this via email on info@tectraining.co.uk or by booking this through our website. When you arrive for your assessment at Tec Training, the invigilator will check your identity and explain what you need to do. The assessment is a computer-based test. The assessment will present 22 questions, 18 must be answered correctly to pass (80% or higher).

The maximum time allowed to complete the assessment is 60 minutes. It is a 'closed book' test under exam and invigilated conditions. You are allowed a maximum of two attempts on the day of the assessment. If you pass the assessment, you will gain your LU-WSSI competence on your Sentinel card. If you do not yet have a Sentinel card, your sponsor will order one for you.

Addtional Information

How long is the WSI competence valid for?

The LU Worksite Safety and Security Induction (LU-WSSI) competence is valid for 6 years, after which you will need to complete a new E-learning and re-certification assessment.

Holding the WSSI competence allows you to access London Underground sites, however, it does not allow you to touch the railway infrastructure. You may work all other jobs that do not require you to interfere with the rail infrastructure such as vegetation, general labour, cleaning etc. Those who wish to carry out track engineering or maintenance must have successfully completed the Track Induction training (for Network Rail) and/or Basic Track Awareness (for London Underground).
