The COSS workplace assessment is for existing Sentinel card holders endorsed with probationary COSS to convert into full COSS within 4 months of a COSS course. Individuals who wish to maintain their certification must successfully complete COSS assessments. If a person fails to carry out their assessment within the correct timescale, they lose the competency and will have to undergo initial training to regain the competency. This workplace assessment incorporates Overhead Line and Conductor Rail Permit modules OLP/CRP/LLT.

Additional Information

It is advised that the COSS assessment is booked well in advance of expiry to avoid losing your competence, as there is no grace period from Sentinel for workplace assessments.

  • Must be a minimum age of 18
  • Must have Primary Sponsor approval before booking
  • Must hold a valid Sentinel Track Safety Card endorsed with PTS, IWA and COSS
  • Must meet the medical requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00124 Medical Fitness Level 4
  • Must have a good level of literacy to meet Entry Qualifications
  • Must meet the requirements of Network Rail Standard NR/L2/OHS/00120 (Drugs & Alcohol).
  • Must provide evidence of a minimum of 4 trackside COSS shifts/practices in the previous 12 months and since their last event completed, and that it has been recorded in the individual’s Online Sentinel Logbook. Physical PTS work experience logbooks (Blue book) can be accepted only if the shift/practice evidence was entered prior to December 6th, 2025, and each shift must be countersigned by the Line Manager. No other form of competence usage is acceptable. From 5th December 2026, this shall be 10 trackside COSS shifts/practices.
  • There must be a minimum of three people within the workgroup, including the COSS and excluding the Assessor. This may need additional planning by Sponsors to make sure workplace assessments are planned to take place on shifts with the required work group members.
  • Must have a mandatory 12 twelve (12) hour rest period before the course as per the rules on Working Time Regulations (1998) and Network Rail Standards NR/L2/OHS/003.
  • Must meet the requirements of NR/L2/CTM/021 - Competence and Training in Track Safety.

Results for the COSS Assessments will be uploaded onto your Sentinel card/profile within 24 hours on successful completion of the event. Should there be any complication in uploading the competencies, we will endeavour to resolve the matter within 5 working days.
